5 drugs that are commonly abused

There are a lot of drugs that people use, misuse and become addicted to. Illicit drugs can have a significant impact on the lives of users. Not only can illegal substances cause a variety of health effects, but they can come with criminal consequences as well.

Due to the fact that there are so many addictive substances in the world, you may be curious about which ones are the most common. Here are some of the most common drugs that people abuse:

1. Cocaine

Cocaine is a stimulating substance that increases dopamine levels. People may inject, smoke or snort the drug. Common effects of cocaine include increased heart rate, headache, alertness, euphoria, nose bleeds, violent behavior stroke, infections and nausea.

2. Opioids

Prescription drugs can also be illegal if people use them improperly. One of the most problematic types of prescription drugs is opioids. Common opioids include:

  • Hydrocodone
  • Codeine
  • Oxycodone
  • Morphine
  • Fentanyl
  • Hydromorphone

Doctors often prescribe these drugs to relieve pain. However, people may misuse such medications because they provide a sense of euphoria and relaxation. Harmful effects of opioids include nausea, slowed breathing, constipation and death from overdosing.

Commonly known as Molly or ecstasy, MDMA is a synthetic substance that changes the perception and mood of users. It is similar to both hallucinogens and stimulants. MDMA may result in a faster heart rate, muscle tension, chills, nausea, kidney failure and death.

4. Methamphetamine

People use and become addicted to methamphetamine because of its stimulating effects that lead to alertness and euphoria. However, this drug can have harmful and long-lasting effects. Health complications of methamphetamine include anxiety, mood problems, dental problems, weight loss and reduced cognitive functions.

5. LSD

One of the most prominent hallucinogenic drugs is LSD, a chemical that significantly alters moods. LSD may come with harmful health effects, including rapid mood swings, distorted reality, terrifying flashbacks, paranoia and increased blood pressure.
